The original Marlin "HEPBURN" sight was designed by Lewis Hepburn (1832 - 1914) and featured a very unique elevation system that hinged in the front and locked into "notches" at the rear for quick elevation changes. Hepburn worked for Marlin for many years and is credited with the design of many successful Marlin Rifles and Shotguns.
Marlin’s 1893 was the precursor to their Model 36 and 336, and is identifiable by its square flush bolt. Based on the patents of L.L. Hepburn, the ’93 also incorporated a two-piece firing pin. The ‘93 differed from its Winchester contemporaries in that the Marlin was side-ejecting, which provided better protection from weather and debris than the competing top-ejecting Winchester.

The Marlin Model of 1893, later designated the Marlin Model 36, was heavier than the Winchester 94, which was then the dominant lever-action hunting rifle. It also featured a semi-pistol grip wooden stock and solid top receiver with side-ejection, in contrast to the Winchester 94 carbine's straight grip stock and top-ejection receiver. In 1893 Marlin applied the "solid-top, side-ejection" concept to full-length rifle cartridges with the Model 1893. Over the years, this rifle would be chambered in.25-36,.30-30,.32 Special,.32-40, and.38-55. This rifle was later re-named the Model 1936 (care to guess when? later this designation was shortened simply to the Model 36).
Marlin introduced their Model 1893 rifle in the eponymous year, initially in old black powder calibers like the .32-40 and .38-55, but soon chambered for the .30-30 Winchester round. Some 900,000 of these guns were made between then and 1935, when the company replaced it with their sleeker Model 36.

There is another way to get a beautiful real Marlin or Winchester. There are some 100-year-old rifles out there with nice bores, no cracks in the stocks, and no dings in the metal for the price of a new lever gun. Personally I much prefer the 1893 to the model 94--much prettier, can accept a scope, and cleans from the chamber.
